Our Powerboat Courses

We offer both RYA Powerboat courses (Level 2 & Safety Boat) and non-RYA refresher and skills development sessions. As these courses are in high demand, it is usual to be in your second year of sailing before completing the RYA courses, although any members are welcome to join the refresher and skills development sessions. 

Powerboat Familiarisation

The first step to learning about Powerboats and how to prepare and launch them at the club, suitable for those considering taking on the role of Safety Boat Crew at the club. A one day course. 

RYA Powerboat Level 2

RYA powerboat courses are primarily for those using small powered craft such as RIBs, dories and sports boats that don't generally undertake long or offshore passages. The course provides you with all you need to know for self-sufficient powerboating at a basic level. Content includes launching, mooring, anchoring and recovery plus all the boat driving skills required for basic competence in a powerboat. This qualification will allow you to be a Safety Boat Helm for Club events.

Prerequisite: No prior experience required, available to members in their second year of membership.
Duration: 2 days
Ages: Adults and Youth (16+)

Dinghy Recovery Skills Session

Suitable for those who have completed a Powerboat Level 2 course, who want more practice in recovering and developing techniques to recover a variety of dinghies. This is also suitable as a refresher course for those who aren't regular SB helms. 

RYA Safety Boat

After completing Powerboat Level 2, this is the next step to becoming a competent safety boat helm, able to provide safety or support cover to a range of craft, particularly sailing or windsurfing in all conditions at a variety of events. The courses includes two days of hands on recovery and fleet management techniques for dinghies and windsurfers for hose operating in a training or racing environment. Useful for those who may want to become Senior Instructors or take on Course Safety Lead roles at large events.

Prerequisite: An understanding of sailing boats and windsurfers, hold RYA PB L2, experienced safety boat helm & crew.
Duration: 2 days
Ages: Adults and Youth (16+)
