WHO CAN JOIN ELTON JUNIOR SESSIONS?
Any Junior Sailors (aged 8 16) who are members of Elton SC.
A parent/guardian must be on site and available to assist at all times.
DOES MY CHILD NEED TO BE ABLE TO SAIL?
No, beginners are welcome. Our aim is to provide an environment in which young sailors will feel secure and ready to learn.
Your child does need to be able to swim at least 50m unaided and be confident in and around the water.
WHEN WILL THE TRAINING PLACE?
During the summer months, training will take place on Thursday nights, sailors should have their allocated boats rigged and be changed into sailing kit by 6pm. There will also be extra weekend sessions for additional courses throughout the year. Once you are at Youth Stage 3, your sailor can also attend Open Training at different clubs around the region.
WHAT WILL MY CHILD LEARN?
A love of sailing! The sailors will be divided into groups who are Beginners roughly up to RYA youth stage 2, Intermediate - RYA stage 3 & 4 and Advanced (Race Training and Advanced Modules). The beginner syllabus will focus will be on the 5 essentials. The Intermediate syllabus will develop use of the 5 essentials and introduce racing and the advanced will include race training, improving tacking & gybing, correct hiking, kiting etc. All sailors will also get experience in double handed boats and develop their seamanship skills. WILL THERE BE RACING? PRIZES?
There will be a variety of fun races each week. We encourage more experienced helms to compete as much as they can, each Sunday in the club races, at local Traveller events, and National events too.
WILL IT BE FUN? WILL THERE BE GAMES? WILL THERE BE FOOD?
Smiles and a fun learning approach and lots of games! On Thursdays, sailors should eat before they arrive; but there will also be warm drinks and a snack after sailing has finished.
WHO WILL TRAIN THE JUNIORS?
Volunteer instructors from the club will provide the training assisted by some of our experienced Juniors who are Instructors.
