Our Club

History of Elton Sailing Club
Founded in 1858, Elton Sailing Club has a long and distinguished history of fostering a love for sailing and providing a platform for sailors to grow, compete, and achieve. From its humble beginnings, the club has evolved into one of the premier sailing clubs in the region, with a legacy that includes numerous national champions and Olympians among its ranks.
The Early Years
In 1858, a group of passionate sailors came together to create a community dedicated to the sport of sailing. The early years were marked by casual sailing events and a commitment to making the sport accessible to all; with a small fleet of dinghies, the clubs members formed the foundation of what would become a thriving sailing community.
Expansion and Growth
Over the years, Elton Sailing Club expanded its activities to include competitive racing and structured training programmes; supporting sailors from novice to elite levels. As interest in the club grew, so did its reputation for developing top-tier sailors. The club has become home to many national champions, with several members achieving significant success on the national and international stage.
Among these distinguished sailors is Lawrie Smith, an Olympic sailor and multiple world champion who honed his skills at Elton Sailing Club. Lawrie's achievements stand as a testament to the club's role in developing world-class talent and encouraging excellence in sailing.
The Modern Era
Today, Elton Sailing Club remains a hub for both recreational sailors and competitive racers. Our members continue to excel in local, national, and international competitions, with many achieving championship titles. The club offers a variety of racing opportunities, including weekly races, training clinics, and prestigious regattas. Our vibrant community includes sailors of all ages, from juniors just starting out to seasoned racers pushing their limits on the water.

We strive to develop the next generation of sailors, just as we've done for over 160 years.
